This page serves as a private platform for the Kyoto Art Center committee to review my artwork inspired by kintsugi in consideration of the Artist in Residency program. At this point, I am uncertain whether I would create paintings, an installation, or both. I want to emphasize this clarity in my statement.

In 2018, I delved into the profound concept of Kintsugi, using a combination of mixed media and 24 karat gold leaf to craft abstract paintings. This exploration stemmed from my personal journey of overcoming brokenness through art. Although I extensively researched Kintsugi online, I have yet to experience it firsthand. Nonetheless, this pursuit led me to create Aisthesis, a significant piece that I showcased in my TEDxSalem talk titled "Reframing the Journey." During the talk, I shared my story of a car accident in 2014 and the subsequent loss of my ability to think and paint abstractly due to a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). Aisthesis marked the moment when my abstract thinking resurfaced.

Throughout my healing process, I sought a philosophy that could help me make sense of my injuries and related disabilities. Kintsugi deeply resonated with me as a guiding principle and a testament to the healing power of art. Below, you will find a selection of abstract mixed-media pieces that were inspired by Kintsugi.

To delve further into this practice, I am eager to immerse myself in Kyoto's vibrant artistic culture and learn Kintsugi firsthand during this residency. With the provided time and space, I aspire to develop visually captivating works that will respectfully explore Kintsugi and its contemporary application in art.

I sincerely appreciate your consideration and eagerly anticipate the opportunity to contribute to the artistic community.

Aisthesis

Inspired by the Japanese principle of kintsugi, Aisthesis embodies the beauty of imperfection and the transformative power of time. This unique work of art flawlessly combines traditional and digital mediums. The original piece, held in a private collection, showcases delicate 24K gold leaf, adding an exquisite touch.

This remarkable artwork has already garnered recognition. It was my privilege to feature it in my TEDxSalem talk, titled "Reframing the Journey." During the talk, I shared how art became a catalyst for my personal transformation after a car accident and MTBI. Aisthesis, therefore, represents not only a distinctive work of art but also a symbol of hope and inspiration.

Curated by HUG for their inaugural ongoing exhibition, "Enter The Inclusiverse," Aisthesis was displayed at the prestigious 0x17 Gallery at The Seaport, New York City (2023).
